It’s March 26th and you know what that means (if not we’re clueing you in), Air Max Day is finally here.
Nike’s annual celebration of everything Air nods to this day in 1987 — when the Air Max 1 first hit the shelves. Designed by Tinker Hatfield, it’s the first sneaker to ever showcase Air cushioning. Now every year on this day, the Swoosh celebrates the visible Max Air unit made iconic by the AM1.
Whether it's the Air Max 90, Air Max 97, or Air Max 270 — Air is a technology that generations of sneakerheads love to stride on. Reliable and lightweight, come on. You can’t go wrong. And that feeling of walking on Air has shaped sports and streetwear cultures to this day.
What exactly is Air cushioning, though? It's easy to see and very hard to miss, thanks to the windows that make it visible in the midsole. Designed by Nike and Frank Rudy in the ‘80s, the tech involves a bubble of Air that compresses with each step to reduce impact, then bounces back for incredible amounts of energy-return.
Each year on Air Max Day you’ll also find all-new Swoosh designs dropping for the celebrations. And this year is definitely no exception.
The Nike Air Max Pulse is joining the lineup this time around and it’s bringing underground inspiration from London’s music scene. A spiritual successor to the 270, it features a point-loaded Air unit for even more bounce and plushness. Its breathable mesh upper comes in a “Photon Dust” design with colours pulled from London’s underground to amp up the edge. Think sporty meets the streets.
But if the Pulse isn’t on beat for you, there are plenty of other Air Max sneakers to choose from. We can direct purists to the Air Max 95, 97 OG, or 90. Or for a retro-modern-twist, the Air Max SYSTM, Pre-Day, 90 Futura, or Terrascape 90 will set you up right. And for those looking for something a bit more cutting-edge, a Flyknit Racer or Air Max 2021 will get you up to speed.
